About the role

A core focus of the project is on how the intervention might address user needs among groups likely to be at risk of diabetes distress & digital exclusion (e.g. socioeconomically disadvantaged & ethnically diverse populations, limited digital literacy, restricted internet access). 

The project is led by Dr Charlotte Dack (Íøºì±¬ÁÏ) and Dr Jamie Ross (Queen Mary University of London). 

There will be three stages to the project: 

  1. A scoping review to synthesise the evidence on experience, engagement, & perceptions of digital health interventions for managing diabetes distress in people living with type 2 diabetes. 
  2. Qualitative interviews to explore i) experiences & needs of people living with type 2 diabetes regarding digital health interventions for diabetes distress and ii) health care professionals perspectives on implementing digital health interventions in routine NHS care.
  3. User testing and Co-Design workshops to develop and optimise the digital health intervention (Healthy Paths) by integrating user-centred feedback to better meet the needs of people experiencing digital distress. 

As the Qualitative and Co-Design Lead at Íøºì±¬ÁÏ, you will drive the design and development process — leading the qualitative research and co-design, ensuring regional diversity and integrating health psychology principles. 

You will also lead on translating user insights into guiding principles for the intervention features, and managing iterative refinements. 

You will play a key role in shaping the digital solution, working closely with a design company to ensure it is intuitive, inclusive, and aligned with NHS pathways. 

Acting as the bridge between users, healthcare professionals, and developers, you will ensure that real-world needs are embedded into the intervention from start to finish.

About you

We welcome applications from candidates who have:

  • A PhD in Psychology or related discipline
  • Experience or interest in the field of health psychology
  • Experience of qualitative data collection (interviews, focus groups) and analysis techniques (e.g. reflexive thematic analysis)
  • Experience of co-design
  • Experience of conducting research involving people living with diabetes and health care professionals is desirable
  • Excellent team working, communication, and time management skills.

We have one position available offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed-term basis.

This Research Assistant post will support data collection and analysis on a longitudinal study of children’s pathways through the healthcare system. 

We are looking to recruit a candidate with skills and experience in some of the following areas:

  •  Quantitative approaches such as longitudinal data analysis, analysis of large datasets and/or data science
  •  Experience of working with children and young people and their parents/carers and/or working in clinical settings / with clinical groups
  •  Participatory research/co-production with an emphasis on hard to reach and underserved populations
  •  Data management and ethics
  • Dissemination skills including use of social media or public engagement
  • Experience of engaging with end users of research, such as healthcare professionals or policy makers and other key stakeholders

The Research Assistant will work with a Post-doctoral Research Associate to support activities relating to the above.  

This includes assisting with recruitment and testing of children and their parents/carers, liaising with schools and alternative educational settings, and helping to analyse the resulting data using quantitative methods.

Previous experience of conducting research with children and young people or working in mental health setting is desirable, but not essential. 

We are looking to recruit someone who enjoys working as part of a team.  

You will also be expected to travel to undertake research or stakeholder engagement activities in the local area (Íøºì±¬ÁÏ and North-East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire).  

With training, the successful candidate will also assist with the supervision and training of undergraduate placement students and research apprentices (this would not be expected in the early stages of the job - only when you are more experienced in the role).

<![CDATA[Research Associate (ED12927)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12927 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=ED12927 The Íøºì±¬ÁÏ is seeking a suitable postdoctoral researcher to work on an exciting new project developing and user testing very brief digital interventions (‘microinterventions’) for reducing eating disorder risk among adolescents in schools. 

The project will explore digital technologies for mental health prevention, adopt person-centred intervention design principles, and work together with young people and school staff to co-design a flexible digital toolkit suitable for schools. The project is funded by the Medical Research Foundation, and supported by the newly developed Disorders of Eating and Body Image research group within the Department of Psychology at the Íøºì±¬ÁÏ.

The project has three main objectives/work packages: 

  1. Establish what secondary school students, teachers, and eating disorder prevention researchers agree are priority intervention targets, strategies, and delivery options.
  2. Iteratively co-design a package of digital microinterventions and associated guidance with students and teachers so that it is relevant, credible, and engaging.
  3. Assess whether this digital microintervention package is feasible to deliver in UK schools, and address key uncertainties related to implementation and evaluation.

About the role

The successful applicant will take a lead in managing all three work packages and be involved in the entire research cycle, involving quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, stakeholder management, and reporting and dissemination activities. 

Particular responsibilities will include, but are not restricted to:

  • Managing advisory panel of stakeholders (i.e., students, school staff, lived experience expert) and guiding integration of perspectives throughout 
  • Collaborating with research team to adapt existing evidence-based intervention strategies into brief interactive digital tools
  • Developing the digital platform and technological features with support from technical experts
  • Preparation of research materials and ethics applications
  • Leading participant recruitment and management across studies, including a multistakeholder survey (Delphi) study, co-design workshops and think-aloud interviews with young people and school staff, and a feasibility trial in secondary schools
  • Facilitating co-design workshops and think-aloud interviews, and guiding iterative refinement of the intervention package
  • Conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses
  • Contributing to academic publications and future funding applications
  • Presenting research at national and international conferences
  • Developing suitable materials for disseminating findings to non-academic audiences

About you

We wish to recruit someone with enthusiasm and interest in young people’s mental health, and eating disorders in particular. 

Previous experience of research in these areas is desirable, but not essential, as we are primarily looking for candidates with relevant research skills. 

The appointed candidate will ideally have a background in Psychology and/or Human Computer Interaction to guide the design and evaluation of the digital intervention. 

We are looking to recruit someone enjoys working as part of a team, values person-centred design principles, and can engage with diverse stakeholders. Ideally, you will have:

  • A PhD in Psychology or background relevant to the project (essential)
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods (essential)
  • Previous experience with developing digital health interventions and/or participatory research methods (desirable)
  • Experience of conducting multi-stakeholder projects (desirable)

This role is offered on a part-time basis (0.5FTE) for 21 months.

As a member of Research Staff at the Íøºì±¬ÁÏ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.
